Μηνύματα αισιοδοξίας εξακολουθεί να εκπέμπει η γερμανική εταιρία CureVac που ειδικεύεται στην παρασκευή εμβολίων και η οποία φαίνεται να παίζει ρόλο κλειδί στην καταπολέμηση του κορωνοϊού. Μέχρι το φθινόπωρο το εμβόλιο;
Αίσθηση προκάλεσε η προ ημερών εκτίμηση του μεγαλομετόχου της CureVac Ντίντμαρ Χοπ ότι η εταιρία του ενδέχεται να έχει ετοιμοπαράδοτο το εμβόλιο κατά του κορωνοϊού ήδη από το ερχόμενο φθινόπωρο. Πρόκειται για τη γερμανική επιχείρηση, την οποία φέρεται να «πολιόρκησε» πρόσφατα ο αμερικανός πρόεδρος Τραμπ προκειμένου να εξασφαλίσει την αποκλειστική χρήση του σκευάσματος. Είναι η ίδια εταιρία την οποία αποφάσισε μόλις την περασμένη εβδομάδα να χρηματοδοτήσει η Κομισιόν με 80 εκατομμύρια ευρώ υπό τη μορφή δανείων.

Σύμφωνα με τον επικεφαλής του εποπτικού συμβουλίου, βιοχημικό, Φρίντριχ φον Μπόλεν, η εταιρία ετοιμάζεται να ξεκινήσει τις πρώτες κλινικές έρευνες εντός των επόμενων εβδομάδων και δη πριν το καλοκαίρι. Όπως είπε σε αποκλειστική του συνέντευξη προς τη Deutsche Welle:
«Καταρχήν πρέπει να καταλάβουμε τι ακριβώς συμβαίνει γύρω μας. Τα εμβόλια είναι ο μοναδικός τρόπος προστασίας του ανθρώπου από μια λοίμωξη. Επιπλέον μπορούν να παρασκευαστούν φάρμακα για ασθενείς που έχουν ήδη προσβληθεί. Σε αυτό το πεδίο καταβάλλονται ήδη πολλές προσπάθειες. Επίσης, στο μεταξύ μάθαμε ότι μια επιθετική μορφή του Covid-19 μπορεί να οδηγήσει σε βαριά πνευμονία. Με την ανάπτυξη φαρμάκων επιχειρείται να τεθεί υπό έλεγχο αυτή η λοίμωξη και να βοηθηθούν οι βαριά άρρωστοι.Το καλύτερο θα ήταν φυσικά ένα εμβόλιο. Υπάρχουν διαφορετικές προσεγγίσεις. Εμείς αξιοποιούμε το λεγόμενο μόριο mRNA (σσ. messenger/ αγγελιοφόρος RNA). Σύντομα θα ξεκινήσουμε τις κλινικές δοκιμές. Εκτιμώ ότι πρόκειται για μια καλή προσέγγιση […] για να αναπτύξουμε ένα καλό εμβόλιο».
Πόσο σύντομα μπορεί να γίνει όμως αυτό; Πόσο σύντομα μπορεί να ανακαλυφθεί το σωτήριο εμβόλιο κατά του κορωνοϊού που θα βάλει τέλος στην πρωτοφανή κρίση που ζει ολόκληρος ο πλανήτης; «Δεν είμαι μάντης και πέραν αυτού εξαρτάται από πολλούς παράγοντες τους οποίους δεν γνωρίζω. Όσον αφορά τα φάρμακα θα χρειαστούν πιθανότατα ορισμένοι μήνες. Όσον αφορά δε τα εμβόλια ή καλύτερα τη διαθεσιμότητά τους, θα απαιτηθούν επίσης κάποιοι μήνες. Ως προς την άδεια κυκλοφορίας και χρήσης του σε ανθρώπους όμως μιλάμε μάλλον για έναν χρόνο», αναφέρει ο Φρίντριχ φον Μπόλεν.

Τι ποσότητες θα μπορεί όμως να παρασκευάζει η CureVac από τη στιγμή που θα έχει βρεθεί το εμβόλιο; «Αναφορικά με το εμβόλιο ο μεγάλος άγνωστος Χ είναι η ποσότητα που θα χρειαστεί για να αποτρέπεται η μετάδοση. Δεν μπορείς να το προβλέψεις αυτό, αλλά ούτε και να κάνεις άπειρες δοκιμές στον άνθρωπο. Τα βήματα αυτά προκαθορίζονται από τις ρυθμιστικές αρχές. Και πρέπει να ρυθμίζονται για να προστατεύονται και οι εθελοντές που συμμετέχουν στις έρευνες. Απαιτείται λοιπόν ορισμένος χρόνος μέχρι να έχουμε αποτελέσματα. Εν μέρει αυτό μπορεί να επισπευσθεί».
Όπως επισημαίνει ο ειδικός, όσον αφορά τη διαθεσιμότητα, το mRNA έχει ένα μεγάλο πλεονέκτημα.«Από το παράδειγμα ενός άλλου εμβολίου της CureVac κατά της λύσσας γνωρίζουμε ότι μόλις ένα μικρογραμμάριο μπορεί να προστατεύσει αποτελεσματικά τον άνθρωπο. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι με ένα γραμμάριο mRNA μπορείς να εμβολιάσεις ένα εκατομμύριο ανθρώπους. Για να έχετε ένα μέτρο σύγκρισης: γνωστά φάρμακα περιέχουν συχνά 500 μιλιγκράμ. Με ένα γραμμάριο μπορείς να παρασκευάσεις έτσι μόλις δυο δόσεις. Με το mRNA μπορείς να προστατεύσεις αποτελεσματικά με πολύ μικρές ποσότητες. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι η ουσία μπορεί να είναι άμεσα διαθέσιμη. Το δεύτερο εξάμηνο θα μπορούσαμε να έχουμε επαρκές υλικό. Αλλά δεν γνωρίζω εάν θα μπορεί ήδη να κυκλοφορήσει».

These Are The Billionaire Investors Behind German Drugmakers Developing A Coronavirus Vaccine

One of Germany’s wealthiest software tycoons is the biggest shareholder in CureVac, a company racing to develop a coronavirus vaccine. Two German billionaire biotech investors are also behind BioNTech, which announced Monday it’s developing a vaccine.
As the race to develop a coronavirus vaccine intensifies, one player—German drugmaker CureVac—is backed by particularly deep pockets. CureVac, which is in the headlines amid rumors that the U.S. government offered funding to lure its research exclusively to America, counts one of Germany’s richest entrepreneurs, Mexican shopping mall tycoons and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation among its investors.
The company’s largest shareholder is German billionaire Dietmar Hopp, who made his fortune as a cofounder of enterprise software company SAP. Hopp, who Forbes estimates to be worth $13.4 billion, has become a significant biotech investor. He said in an interview with the German publication Handelsblatt that he has put over $1.5 billion into biotech firms.
CureVac is worth $1.7 billion, according to CB Insights. Hopp owns more than 80% of its shares and according to CB Insights invested a total of $189 million into the company.
CureVac is still very early in the vaccine development stage, but tells Forbes that it expects its vaccine candidate to be in a phase one clinical trial—which tests for safety, not efficacy—by June. Due to the pandemic, CureVac expects drug regulators to speed up the vaccine development process, which usually takes more than a year, if not several years. The drugmaker uses messenger RNA to develop immunotherapies for fighting cancer and rare diseases.
Hopp’s commitment to biopharma research got public attention after the German paper Welt am Sonntag reported on March 15 that the Trump administration tried to lure CureVac to the U.S. to secure the coronavirus vaccine exclusively for US citizens. The German Ministry of Health and the Minister of Interior both confirmed to Reuters that they were doing everything they could to prevent CureVac from moving its research to the US. CureVac told Forbes that there hasn’t been any bid by the U.S. to acquire the company’s technology. CureVac has operations in the Boston area but its vaccine work is being done in Tuebingen.
Hopp made clear he opposes any idea of exclusivity. “If we’ll hopefully soon succeed to develop an efficient vaccine against the coronavirus, this should be accessible and should protect and help people not only in one region, but all over the world,” he said in a statement issued on March 15 by his dievini Hopp Biotech company.
Bill Gates, whose charitable foundation partnered with CureVac as early as 2013 to develop vaccines against malaria and universal influenza, is convinced of their approach. “The implications of mRNA vaccines are enormous,” Gates said in a speech at the Grand Challenges Annual Meeting in Berlin in 2018. “They could be produced cheaply and quickly – maybe even quickly enough to respond to a new global pandemic.” The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded CureVac with $44.2 million, including grants to work on the malaria and influenza vaccines. CureVac confirmed that the Gates Foundation is the second biggest shareholder in the company.
Two other German billionaires’ investment in a biotech company might also help end the pandemic. BioNTech, a publicly-traded German company backed by billionaire twins Thomas and Andreas Struengmann, announced on Monday its own vaccine candidate to help prevent the coronavirus. BioNTech expects to start clinical testing of the vaccine in late April, ahead of CureVac. Thomas and Andreas Struengmann, who Forbes estimates to be worth $6.7 billion each, are majority shareholders of BioNTech and together own just over 50% of the shares.
Share of BioNTech soared 29% Monday on the news. That made the Struengmann brothers the two biggest gainers — up $500 million each— on Forbes Real Time Billionaires tracker on Monday.

Germany's CureVac wins new vaccine funding from Gates Foundation
(Reuters) - German biotech firm CureVac has secured more financial backing for vaccine development projects from its investor the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, working on jabs to prevent malaria and influenza.
The research projects will run until 2020 with the aim to find drug candidates based on CureVac’s synthetic messenger RNA, or mRNA technology, that may at later stages be tested on humans, said a spokesman, declining to disclose financial terms.
Drugs or vaccines based on mRNA provide a type of genetic blueprint that can be injected into the body to instruct cells to produce out the desired therapeutic proteins, as opposed to the conventional approach of making these proteins in labs and bio-reactors.
“Successfully exploring the potential of the mRNA platform for development of a universal flu vaccine would be a consequential achievement, benefiting much of the world’s population,” said Ingmar Hoerr, CureVac’s co-founder and chief executive.
Privately-held CureVac, based in the university town of Tuebingen, has so far raised around $420 million in equity investments, with SAP cofounder Dietmar Hopp and the Gates Foundation as lead investors.
The Gates Foundation has already provided separate funding to CureVac’s work on vaccines against infectious diseases that mainly affect people in developing countries.
CureVac, which has struck commercial alliances with drugmaker’s Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly, competes in the race for mRNA treatments with biotech groups such as Massachusetts-based Moderna Therapeutics, Germany’s BioNTech and Belgium’s eTheRNA.
